Today, two notable things happened on my lunch break.
The first thing that was notable (which actually happened second) was that as I drove up to the McDonalds’ drive through to grab a quick cheeseburger, I was denied. There was a big sign taped to the drive through speaker that said “We are closed – All our registers are down”. So let me get this straight – you can’t hand me a prepackaged salad, or flip me a cheeseburger because your cash register doesn’t work? At lunch hour? How did people ever survive before James Ritty invented the cash register in 1883? They must have been real hungry, I guess.
The other thing is this. I bought 3 pairs of shoes today, which isn’t that unreasonable, but what was really odd about it was that a) they were what my doctor calls “sensible” shoes, and b) I paid full price for them. I never pay full price. I have come to hate sensible shoes in the last 6 months – I now love teetery shoes. Unfortunately, the missing bone in my left foot (damn Jr. High track) is causing the rest of that foot to hate the teetery shoes. I have been looking for non-hideous, sensible shoes for the last 6 months, but there just haven’t been any out there on sale. So today, in my Nikes, I was informed by the man at Dillards that the fall shoes are in! And they are sensible! And they are not even remotely on sale! So I tried on a million pairs, and bought 3.
I have resisted, but here is what finally got me (besides the pain). This morning as I considered my shoes, I heard a little voice in my head. My grandmother Ellen had a beautiful wardrobe, and wretched, wretched feet. One time when I was visiting her, she went to her closet and pulled out “The Shoes That Ruined My Feet”. She kept them for years and years to remind herself of the error of her ways. I don’t have enough storage to keep all the teetery shoes forever, so I guess I will just have to be more sensible. Maybe just not every day…

The comment about your Grandma Selden made me smile because I could hear her say that. She was a great lady and she and your Grandma Zamora had some great travels together!
